But for me, chicken wings alone are not enough.
The meals that I grew up with were always packed with side dishes.
When I cook now, I can’t resist the urge to create meals that work like happy little families. Every member of the household, no matter how small, has an important role to play!
These are a few of the simple side dishes that I love to prepare alongside chicken wings. I’m excited to hear what you think of them, and how they match with your favorite wing recipes!
1. Crispy Oven-Baked Garlic Fries
Let’s start with the basics… Meat and potatoes!
These garlic fries pose some healthy competition to your chicken wings when it comes to the ‘most finger-licking dish’. The sweetness and depth of garlic is a perfect counterpoint to the buttery inner and crunchy outer of the fries.
Oven-baked equals simple preparation and very little fuss. While you’re frying chicken wings on the stove, your fries will be happily crisping up in the oven.
2. Creamy Coleslaw with Cilantro-Lime Dressing
Coleslaw is a great way to sneak some greens into my kids' meals. They love the contrast between the crunchy cabbage and the smooth, rich dressing.
The cilantro-lime seasoning is bright and fresh — perfectly cutting through the coleslaw’s creamy base. To me, enlivening this traditional Dutch cabbage dish with Latin American flavors is a wonderful example of modern American home cooking.
It’s also a very fast and nutritious dish to throw together. When I’m serving wings, it’s become second nature for me to start shredding cabbage and squeezing limes!
3. Poblano Mac and Cheese with Crispy Bacon Topping
Bacon, plus mac and cheese – plus poblano chili?
This one is a crowd-pleaser for sure. I always prepare it with a mind for leftovers! But honestly, this dish never makes it off the table and into the fridge
The sweet smoky poblano adds a world of depth to this mac and cheese. And bacon is well… bacon. Do I have to say more?
I love dishes like this because they can be left to bake in the oven or pre-prepared and reheated. This gives me a lot of freedom in the kitchen and keeps things simple.
4. Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans with Sausage
Sweet and spicy are two of my favorite words to hear!
These gorgeous homemade baked beans perfectly round out a dinner table. Alongside wings, a salad, and a decadent carbohydrate option, this side dish sings!
The sausage is a cheerful addition to classic baked beans — providing a savory foundation to the sweet and spicy sauce.
This is also a ‘one pot’ dish — making the preparation and cleanup fast and easy.
5. Classic Potato Salad with Creamy Dill Dressing
Creamy potatoes and dill. It’s a match made in heaven and a flavor combination I always return to.
This side dish is a classic for a reason. Whenever my kids see potatoes go into the pot, they immediately ask if I’m making a potato salad.
I love taking this dish to BBQs or prepping it earlier in the day if I’m serving wings that night. The fact that it only improves with a few hours in the fridge, makes this classic salad a family favorite.
6. Caesar Salad with Homemade Garlic Croutons
Creamy Caesar dressing and fresh garlic croutons? Yes, please!
The Caesar salad is an inspired combination of Italian, Mexican, and Californian cuisine. It’s been a staple of American cooking since the 1920s!
The smell of garlic croutons baking drives dinner guests wild with anticipation. To be honest, the real challenge is getting the croutons into the salad without munching them all in the kitchen!
This Caesar salad is the perfect complement to wings! It brings freshness, a smooth rich dressing, and the textural delights of crunchy croutons and crisp lettuce.
7. Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries with Chipotle Aioli
There is nothing that can’t be improved by the addition of Chipotle aioli. And sweet potato fries are no exception.
This is a simple recipe. Fries are seasoned and tossed into the oven. Aioli is whipped up in a food processor or pounded out by hand with a mortar and pestle.
The result, however, is rich and complex. Sweet potato fries are already, on their own, a wonderful ingredient, packed with sweetness and flavor. When you add a smoky, garlicky, creamy aioli into the mix, this side dish will take center stage.
As a bonus, you can dip your fries and wings into the decadent aioli. And, like I say, there is nothing that can’t be improved with Chipotle aioli!
8. Grilled Corn on the Cob with Spicy Lime Butter
This dish champions the ingredients and flavors of old and new Latin America.
Grilled corn is a go-to BBQ option in many American households. A generous dollop of spicy lime butter takes sweet and humble corn-on-the-cob to the next level.
The beauty of this recipe is in its simplicity. The spicy lime butter can be whipped together in less time than it takes to grill the corn.
9. Garlic Bread Twists with Parmesan and Herbs
Who doesn’t like garlic bread?
This recipe is rustic and delightful. You don’t need a whole lot of fancy ingredients to create a tasty and satisfying dish. Parmesan, a few common herbs, and garlic.
These twists are a tummy filler and a crowd-pleaser.
10. Grilled Vegetable Skewers with Balsamic Glaze
Vegetables can often go neglected when there are wings on the table. Well, not in my house!
These vegetable skewers are sweet and crisp. Their bright flavors are underlined by the tart balsamic glaze. Grilling these skewers rounds them out, providing the slightest char and caramelization.
These grilled vegetable skewers can go toe to toe with succulent wings — adding color and freshness to any dinner table.
